Receding hairline in women; causes & solutions for resilient hair

If you’re noticing a change to your hairline and wondering what happened to your thick strands you can begin to stress less. There a simple steps to help prevent and regrow a receding hairline.

We often think of a receding hairline as male issue. And while it’s more common in men, many women will experience thinning hair that can lead to a receding hairline, particularly around the temples. Here, we explore the causes of a receding hairline and regime changes you can make to help grow longer, stronger and thicker hair.

What causes receding hairline?

A receding hairline in women can be attributed to a variety of factors, both genetic and environmental. Understanding these causes is the first step towards finding effective solutions.

Genetics

Androgenetic Alopecia: This genetic condition is the female counterpart of male pattern baldness. It’s the most common cause of hair loss in women and involves the overproduction of the hormone dihydrotestosterone (DHT), which weakens hair follicles, leading to hair thinning and recession.

Family History: A strong family history of hair loss can increase the likelihood of a receding hairline. If your mother, grandmother, or other female relatives experienced hair loss, it may be passed down to you.

Hormonal Imbalances

Polycystic Ovary Syndrome (PCOS): This common hormonal disorder can lead to an excess of androgens, which may result in hair loss, including receding hairlines.

Thyroid Disorders: Both an overactive (hyperthyroidism) and underactive (hypothyroidism) thyroid can disrupt the hair growth cycle, causing hair loss.

Physical and Environmental Factors

Hairstyling Practices: Excessive use of hair straighteners, curling irons, and tight hairstyles can cause stress and damage to hair follicles, leading to hair loss over time.

Nutritional Deficiencies: A lack of essential nutrients, such as iron, biotin, and certain vitamins, can contribute to hair thinning and recession.

Stress: High stress levels can disrupt the hair growth cycle, potentially leading to hair loss, including a receding hairline.

Regrowing hair in women

Reversing a receding hairline in women takes a multi-faceted approach that focuses on nourishing scalp health while minimising factors that contribute to thinning hair including stress, lack of sleep, smoking, excessive alcohol consumption and harsh chemical treatments.

Nutrition plays a pivotal role in hair health and preventing female receding hairlines. Unfortunately, it’s not always easy, or realistic, to get the nutrients you need through diet alone, which is where supplements can provide convenient support. A key player is collagen, a protein that supports the skin of the scalp as well as the structure of hair follicles. Daily use of Natural Marine Collagen helps to improve the strength and thickness of hair while reducing hair shedding and ensuring hair follicles get adequate nutrients.

For targeted support, Hairology addresses the causes of thinning, weak and brittle hair helping the impacts of stress, hormones, ageing and vitamin deficiencies. Hero active AnaGain™ works alongside micronutrients such as zinc, selenium, bladderwrack and biotin that all contribute to improved hair density and health.

Professional treatments and solutions

If dietary and lifestyle changes aren’t helping you achieve the progress you’d like, there are more invasive professional treatments you can explore.

Platelet-Rich Plasma (PRP) Therapy: PRP therapy involves extracting a patient's blood, processing it to concentrate the platelets, and then injecting the platelet-rich plasma into the scalp. This procedure can promote hair regrowth by stimulating the hair follicles.

Hair Transplants: Hair transplant surgery, such as follicular unit transplantation (FUT) and follicular unit extraction (FUE), can be highly effective in restoring a natural hairline. This option is typically recommended for women with significant hair loss

Low-Level Laser Therapy (LLLT): LLLT is a non-invasive procedure that uses low-level lasers to stimulate hair follicles, improve blood circulation, and promote hair growth. It can be performed in professional settings or with home-use devices.

Experiencing changes to your hair is inevitable. However, there are simple steps you can take to reverse damage and prevent excessive thinning. With age, genetics, nutrition and lifestyle all contributing to a receding hairline, a bidirectional approach is best including a diet rich in nourishing food, reducing the stress you put your hair under with styling tools and colouring, as well as adding supplements that help to care for the scalp and the hair follicle on a cellular level. Small daily changes will add up over time to prevent a receding hair and help thicken and strengthen the hair.
